A budget travel backpack should save money without creating an airport problem. That means checking outside dimensions, empty weight, and return terms before counting pockets or trusting a “flight approved” label.
Price note: official U.S. prices below were checked July 16, 2026 and can change. Sale prices, colors, inventory, and return terms may differ. We have not carried these packs.
Three lower-cost travel packs compared
| Backpack | Price checked | Size / weight | The tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open Story 35L Travel Backpack | $50 | 19.25 × 13 × 8.25 in 2.42 lb | Lowest price here / too large for many personal-item limits |
| Decathlon Quechua NH Escape 500 32L | $65 | 19.7 × 11 × 9.8 in 2.4 lb | Many pockets / deep when fully packed |
| Osprey Daylite 26+6 | $110 regular price | 17 × 13 × 6 in 1.85 lb | Compact and expandable / less room at regular size |
We used the prices visible on the brands’ U.S. pages on the date above. A temporary discount is a bonus, not the basis for a recommendation.
What each budget buys
Target’s pack measures 19.25 × 13 × 8.25 inches and weighs 2.42 pounds. It has a zip-around opening, interior mesh sections, a padded laptop pocket for devices up to the stated 17 inches, and a luggage-handle sleeve. The rectangular shape is suited to folded clothes and packing cubes.
It is an overhead carry-on, not a conservative personal item. The height exceeds the 18-inch personal-item rule used by American, and the 13-inch width exceeds United’s published ten inches. The one-year limited warranty is also shorter than the coverage on many premium bags.
Decathlon lists three compartments, numerous pockets, two bottle holders, and space for a 17-inch laptop. The chest strap, basic waist belt, and padded back give it more load-control hardware than a simple school-style backpack. The product page lists a ten-year warranty.
The 19.7 × 11 × 9.8-inch body is almost ten inches deep before a water bottle or soft pocket bulges. It will fit some overhead rules but not a strict nine-inch box on paper. Many compartments also add their own seams and zippers; travelers who pack with cubes may prefer one open cavity.
The Daylite is 17 × 13 × 6 inches and 1.85 pounds in its regular form. It has a clamshell opening, internal tie-down, laptop sleeve, bottle pockets, sternum strap, and a ventilated foam back panel. Those dimensions fit a common 18 × 14 × 8-inch personal-item allowance.
It is the most expensive bag here at regular price and the smallest before expansion. Opening the expander adds six liters and two inches of depth, turning it into an overhead bag for many airlines. It is still too wide for United’s published 17 × 10 × 9-inch personal-item rule.
What to inspect on a lower-cost pack
A price tag does not tell you whether a zipper binds, a laptop sleeve bottoms out, or a harness fits your shoulders. Check those details while the bag can still be returned instead of assuming either bargain quality or bargain failure.
- Load it with the weight you expect to carry and walk for thirty minutes.
- Pull every zipper around a packed corner without forcing it.
- Check whether the laptop rests above the floor of the bag.
- Make sure bottle pockets still work when the main compartment is full.
- Read who pays return and warranty shipping.
- Measure the packed bag, not the empty product photo.
When it is worth spending more
Spend more when you need an adjustable torso, a supportive hip belt for heavy loads, specialist laptop protection, or repair coverage you expect to use. A premium logo by itself is not a reason.
For one or two leisure trips a year, a simple $50 pack that fits may cover the job. For weekly travel with a heavy laptop, put harness fit and repair terms ahead of the lowest initial price.
Compare larger overhead options in the carry-on backpack guide. If avoiding an overhead-bag fee is the priority, start with the personal-item comparison and your airline’s exact fare.
Frequently asked questions
How much should a budget travel backpack cost?
For this comparison, we used current regular prices of $110 or less. The right threshold depends on the features, warranty, and how often the bag will be used.
Is a budget travel backpack safe for a laptop?
A padded sleeve helps, but check whether it is suspended above the bottom and fits the exact device. Use a separate sleeve when protection looks thin.
Can a 35-liter backpack be a personal item?
Usually not by the written rules of major U.S. airlines. Shape matters more than the liter label, but most 35-liter packs are overhead carry-ons.
Should I wait for a sale?
Only if you have time to test and return the bag before the trip. Do not keep a poor fit because the discount looked good.
